i went to check my ac system and found the compressor clutch is not engaging, the last time i delt with ac mantainence was in school and it was recharge or replace, my jeep is a 97 with the 2.5.

does any one know of any common problems that will occour with chrystler compressors because i doubt the compressor guts took a crap. there was no pressure in the system but again there is no engagement of the clutch. is there some saftey if there is no coolent or is it a clutch malfunction that can be repaired without dropping over 100 bucks, any ideas???

sorry if this is all running together im on my phone and the ie is shakey

there is a safety that will prevent it from coming on if the pressure in the lines is too low. i would suggest getting one of those diy a/c kits, preferably one WITHOUT leak sealer, and check to see if it will kick on.
if it doesn't, i would look at the switch and the relay.
if both of those are ok then i would say that you have a burnt up compressor clutch. you may be able to get just the clutch assembly but i'm not 100% sure.

If there is no pressure in the system the compressor will not engage because the low pressure switch will not allow it. The low pressure switch is on the accumulator under the hood, it's the black can hooked the the evaporator where it comes through the firewall. You can disconnect the wire on the switch and use a jumper wire across the 2 terminals. If the compressor engages the charge is too low or the switch is bad.
You really should have a gauge set to check pressures. If you need help with it , let me know.

Mark

YAY i have AC, not had that all summer!

How I Fixed it was through the Accumulator pressure switch.
As soon as I jumped the switch, the belt let out this god awful screech and i had AC.
Half or so of a can fixed it, and I love the results

My dad had some AC tools that he gave me so I am all set with that, Thanks everyone for all your tips and willingness to loan tools and help!!

so next time we are on the trail and any one is burning up, come see me
